HAPPY HOLIDAY MONDAY!
I Have A Dream is the speech Martin Luther King, Jr. made in at the end of the March on Washington in 1963. I was 12 years old – I’ll let you do the math – and remember hearing news about the march but I didn’t get to hear the speech until I was an adult.
I looked up the speech and re-read it last week – when I got to the line “…the fierce urgency of now…” I knew it would be going into my art journal.

I decided to write out the entire speech using Sharpie Poster-Paint Water-Based Pens, White-Extra Fine and Fine. The black text is using Pitt Pens.
The speech is 6 or 7 pages long and this is two pages written out.
And even though Dr. King was talking about segregation in his speech – “this Fierce Urgency of NOW!” – applies to anything that detracts from the opening statement of our Declaration of Independence, ”We hold these truths to be self-evident-all men are created equal.”
I went online and got some images of Dr. King and President Obama and tried to use the images as silhouettes. Could not get them to stick down and stay in place. And Obama does not look like he is saluting his predecessors. So I tried outlines…I started to write dates and stuff in the bodies of King and Obama. I also added an image of the Lincoln Memorial and the date of the Emancipation Proclamation – 1863. I have decided I do not like the outlined men and have made them solid again.
I collaged in - with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium - representatives of equal rights for women in science, politics, entertainment and leadership. Funnily this also covered equal rights for black Americans, gay Americans and the political leadership roles.
Today is an American National holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.There is a “fierce urgency of now!” to being inspired. If not now – when?
This post got my semi-dormant Activist genes all riled up, but I decided (since it is not my personal blog) to finish up peacefully. Thanks for reading, I’d love to hear your comments. Happy holiday!
