Stencils and Texture

The whirlwind of our first official blog hop is over. I absolutely loved seeing all of the artists using the stencils in different ways. We’ve seen stenciling on everything from fabric to canvas, using pretty much every medium possible, including liquid graphite (must try!) I sure got a lot of ideas to try, now I just need more time to play!

When I first got the stencils I spent some time playing with them (because it’s my job, right?) One of my favorite things to do with stencils is squish molding paste or wood icing through them. This one was made using the Romans Stencil and Wood Icing. It just looked like it belongs at a wedding.

Check out this yummy texture!

Another project I started was using the Road Map Stencil and a Cathedral Stencil. I can’t show you the whole canvas because I also used a stencil that hasn’t been released yet!

The Cathedral stencil has coarse molding paste squished through, then the raised area was rubbed with some Inka Gold.

My last canvas board shows implied texture. I used the River Map stencil as the center focal point. Instead of molding paste, I used layers and layers of Silks Paints. Maybe even too many layers, because in the end I feel like it’s a bit dark.

There’s a topographical map in there, sheet music, and a print that was made with a Map Stencil. I made the map print in Jane Davies’ class at CREATE. It involved a brayer, black paint, a map stencil, and an “abracadabra” and magic happened. Okay, I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t remember exactly how I made it. I’ve tried to reproduce it to no avail. I might have to take a class with her again, yeah, that’s the ticket…

What’s your favorite way to add texture to a piece of art? Have you tried using molding paste with stencils? Do you like the look? Drop us a comment and share!
