Artistcellar was kind enough to share two of their newest 8.5 x 11 stencils with me from their “Arabian Night Series“…I am a Lucky Girl!
Star & Cross AND Constellation.
I’ve been playing on papers. Some of my favorite stenciling tools are a foam roller, old room key card and wedge makeup sponge.
Don’t forget the impact of the negative image from stencils as well as the positive image. Just use a baby wipe over the stencil to rub out the image.
I prefer to work with a variety of papers…tissue paper for transparency…deli paper, phone book pages, brown craft paper, junk mail, atlas pages, etc…expect opaque images from these resources.
I prepared my substrate, a canvas board, and have my stenciled papers handy for inspiration.
I sketched some whimsical birds and used translucent silk glazes over the outlines of the birds. I placed tracing paper on top of my artwork as I want to create collage templates for the belly of the birds.
After tracing, I can place the paper over stenciled pages and move it around until I determine the image desired for the collage.
I can now cut out the image, place it on the piece with repositionable glue until I decide if I like it…then adhere it permanently with matte medium.
I also used my stenciled papers to fill in free form circles I drew to add interest to my art composition.
Can you see the “Constellation” theme echoed in the circles?
A bit closer for details….
Hope you’ve learned something new…
Got Inspired….
And have time to Play today…
I’ve got to get back to work using my stenciled papers, but not before saying…
Thank you to Artistcellar for the opportunity to create with your stencils…
and share my “Stencil Geek” lesson:)
Best,
Theresa Plas
